Coinbase reported better-than-expected revenue in its first-quarter earnings report on Thursday. Transaction revenue has historically been a primary driver of revenue, with subscription and services revenue bringing in $511 million for the quarter. The stock tends to benefit from big gains in bitcoin as large rallies in the cryptocurrency lead to increased trading volumes and demand for other services. During the first quarter, bitcoin hit a new all-time high above $73,000 in March, and ethereum, the second-biggest digital asset, underwent its first major upgrade in over a year. "Indeed, trading volumes on Coinbase's platform have come well down from early-March levels."

The debate over whether Chinese-owned TikTok can operate in the U.S. is back with fervor, revealing more about the risk for Chinese stocks in a U.S. presidential election year. Such considerations motivated Goldman Sachs analysts to update their model for measuring the level of risk from U.S.-China tensions in Chinese stocks. Their barometer, created in 2020, "has correlated well with the U.S.-China events timeline, and China equity performance," the analysts said. Goldman's revised U.S.-China tensions barometer stands at a modest 53 out of 100, indicating a "somewhat benign" outlook for the bilateral relationship. But as the TikTok bill now makes its way to the Senate, many analysts expect its momentum to slow.

If that return isn't there, will they keep ordering the latest and greatest Nvidia chips? Despite the overall improvements in availability, Nvidia on Wednesday indicated it will face supply-and-demand imbalances with its upcoming AI chips. The U.S. government has said its export controls are designed to keep high-powered AI chips out of the hands of the Chinese military. In the November-through-January quarter, China accounted for a mid-single-digit percentage of Nvidia's $18.4 billion in data center revenue, according to the company. The fact Nvidia still booked China revenue in the hundreds of millions of dollars means it could take a further hit in the region.

Wall Street is forecasting a better backdrop for companies that want to go public. While lower rates can stoke the IPO market, fewer rate cuts because the economy remains strong with cooling inflation should still be viewed as favorable. The IPO market and mergers and acquisitions (M & A) activity started to sour when the Fed began hiking interest rates back in March 2022. A strong IPO market overall is expected to also benefit burgeoning biotechnology firms, which would mean more business for Danaher. NEW YORK (AP) — The highly-anticipated trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI arrived a little early after a copy was leaked online. In an early Tuesday brief, Raymond James analysts said that they originally expected Grand Theft Auto VI to arrive in the 2024 holiday season. "It is simply a shift rather than a reduction in expectations.”The first Grand Theft Auto hit store shelves back in 1997. Grand Theft Auto VI will arrive more than a decade after Grand Theft Auto V's 2013 release. Stifel researchers pointed to “exceptionally strong” buzz and pent-up demand following the Grand Theft Auto VI teaser — pointing to the tens of millions of views collected within hours.

Chinese smartphone companies like Huawei are rebounding in their home market, giving a boost to domestic suppliers — and increasing the pressure on Apple . Huawei smartphone sales surged by 83% in October from a year ago, Counterpoint Research said in a note Tuesday. Honor, a Huawei spin-off, saw sales climb by 10%, while Xiaomi smartphone sales rose by 33%, the report said. The report did not break out Apple sales, only saying a broad category of "others" saw October smartphone sales drop by 12% from a year ago. For context, Shanghai-based CINNO Research expects a 2% decline in Apple iPhone sales in China this year to 45.5 million units.

AMD stock spiked more than 8% Wednesday, a day after the company beat top and bottom-line earnings estimates and gave a promising 2024 forecast for its AI chip business. The chipmaker posted an earnings per share of 70 cents, adjusted, narrowly beating the LSEG, formerly Refinitiv, estimate of 68 cents per share. Wall Street analysts like AMD's prospects in the AI market, which is currently dominated by Nvidia . Still, AMD is one of only a handful of companies capable of making high-powered graphics processing units (GPUs) that power AI models. Analysts at Raymond James lowered their price target from $145 to $125 but kept AMD as a "strong buy" largely due to its AI business.

One such cable hangs bordering a playground in Wappingers Falls, New York, and lead in nearby soil measured more than 1,000 parts per million, the Journal reported. AT&T shares earlier this week hit a three-decade low following a flurry of downgrades from analysts on concerns that the potential of toxic lead cables could create long-term headwinds for the companies in question. Shares of Verizon, also mentioned in the Journal’s investigation, fell to their lowest closing level since 2010 on Monday. Shares of telecom companies pared back their losses Wednesday, buoyed by a broader market rally fueled by strong second-quarter earnings reports. Raymond James analysts wrote in a note Wednesday that they estimate AT&T could spend between $264 million and $1.2 billion to remove lead-covered cables.

July 6 (Reuters) - U.S. bank stocks fell and a key regional index hit a near two-week low on Thursday amid lingering worries about the health of the lenders in the aftermath of the crisis in regional banks and ahead of second-quarter results that start next week. The KBW Regional Banking Index (.KRX) fell 3% to its lowest since June 23, adding to its year-to-date loss of 25.9%. The S&P 500 Banks Index (.SPXBK) slipped nearly 2.8%. Regional lender PacWest Bancorp (PACW.O) dropped 8.1% after KBW analysts cut the price target on the stock to $9 from $14. Last week, shares rose after the Federal Reserve's annual health checks showed lenders could weather an economic slump.

Of the six regional lenders that were part of the test, Bank of New York Mellon (BK.N) and US Bancorp (USB.N) added 1.5% and 0.8%, respectively. J.P. Morgan downgraded the bank to 'neutral' in anticipation of an increase in capital requirements hurting its profitability. Citigroup (C.N) rose marginally, but trailed its peers as analysts expect that an increase in its stress capital buffer would hamper its plans to improve profitability. "Citi will now have the highest CET1 requirement among our banks at 12.3%," J.P. Morgan analysts wrote in a client note. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 Banks Index (.SPXBK), tracking a basket of large-cap bank stocks, is up 0.9% quarter-to-date, but has fallen 12.2% so far this year.

New York CNN —Taylor Swift, public transit savior? Public transit systems across the United States are getting a much-needed, if temporary, boost from Taylor Swift fans flooding trains, buses and subways to her sold-out Eras Tour. As transit agencies scramble to recover from the pandemic, transit experts say all those Swifies taking mass transit offer lessons for policymakers on how to adapt to the post-pandemic world. Philadelphia’s SEPTA system and New Jersey Transit also got a boost from concertgoers taking mass transit to Swift shows. But public transit agencies still have yet to fully recover from the impact of the pandemic.

Reflecting investor optimism about passage, the cost of insuring exposure to a U.S. debt default dropped on Tuesday, but some concerns remained because of the tight timeline and opposition from some lawmakers. Last week, credit rating agency Fitch placed its "AAA" rating of U.S. sovereign debt on watch for a possible downgrade, citing downside risks including political brinkmanship and a growing debt burden. In a previous debt ceiling crisis in 2011 rating agency Standard & Poor's cut the U.S. top 'AAA' rating by one notch a few days after a debt ceiling deal, citing political polarization and insufficient steps to right the nation's fiscal outlook. "Even if a U.S. default is averted, a ratings downgrade could still happen," Vishwanath Tirupattur, a strategist at Morgan Stanley, said in a research note on Sunday. Some also fear a debt ceiling resolution could only provide short-term relief to markets because the U.S. Treasury is expected to quickly refill its account with bond sales, sucking out hundreds of billions of dollars of cash from the market.

Banks finally got a long-awaited boost to interest rates this year after a decade of toiling in a low-rate environment. A year ago, big lenders including Bank of America and Wells Fargo were the top picks of the analyst community because they were expected to benefit from higher rates . Loan growth coupled with vast deposit bases would drive gains in interest income as the Federal Reserve hiked rates, the thinking went. In a downturn, banks are exposed to surging loan defaults, reduced loan demand and write-downs on assets. Veteran analyst Mike Mayo of Wells Fargo said that bank stocks could pop 50% in 2023 by proving their resilience in a recession.
Revenue growth slowed to 6% from 41% a year earlier as the company contends with a continued downdraft in online ad spending. Analysts were expecting an increase of about 3% in YouTube ad revenue, but it slid about 2% to $7.07 billion from $7.21 billion a year ago. Raymond James analysts also maintained their outperform rating, citing expectations for long-term ad revenue growth and Google Cloud momentum. Alphabet's report marks an ominous start to Big Tech earnings week for investors focused on the digital ad market, and analysts at Needham said it is likely bad news for Meta . Meta is scheduled to report earnings after the bell Wednesday.
